About Dr Nathan Zhang

Expert Piano Educator

Dr Nathan Zhang is a highly regarded piano educator whose students have achieved successful outcomes in piano auditions and competitions worldwide. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of repertoire, performance practice, and audition preparation, he has guided students to pass auditions in China, Europe, and the United States, and in Australia at leading institutions including the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, and the University of Queensland. Students from his studio have also received prizes in piano competitions across Queensland and internationally, reflecting both artistic growth and technical excellence. In addition, Dr Zhang has extensive experience preparing students for AMEB piano examinations from Grade 1 through to LMUS, as well as equivalent levels within the ABRSM examination system.
Alongside his teaching achievements, Dr Zhang is an accomplished pianist and practice-led researcher specialising in French piano repertoire and Historically Informed Performance (HIP). He holds both a Master of Music and a PhD in Piano Performance from the University of Queensland, where his research has focused on early instruments, artistic research methodologies, and interpretive approaches to the works of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Dr Zhang began his formal musical training in China, where he was admitted with first place ranking to the Guangxi Arts University as a piano major and completed his Bachelor of Music degree. He later presented solo recitals in China and the United States, gaining valuable international performance experience before relocating to Australia to pursue further study at the UQ School of Music.
During his Master of Music studies at the University of Queensland, Dr Zhang achieved the highest performance gradein the program and was awarded the Robert Dalley-Scarlett Prize. Throughout his master’s degree, he was actively involved in numerous performances at the UQ School of Music, further refining his artistic voice and professional performance experience.
Dr Zhang’s doctoral studies took the form of a practice-led PhD, integrating recital performances and recordings as central research outputs. His doctoral research was supervised by Dr Simon Perry and Dr Anna Grinberg, and was further enriched through participation in masterclasses with leading international artists. Throughout this period, he benefited from the generous guidance and artistic support of distinguished musicians and pedagogues, including Stephen Emmerson and Professor Liam Viney, whose dedication made a significant contribution to his artistic and scholarly development.
Dr Nathan Zhang Piano Studio is dedicated to providing a nurturing and inspiring environment in which students can explore and develop their pianistic potential. Through personalised instruction informed by artistic research, historical awareness, and professional performance experience, the studio aims to support each student’s long-term musical development with clarity, depth, and confidence.
