About Dr Nathan Zhang

A Teacher Who Brings Out the Best in Every Student

If you ask the families who study with Dr Nathan (Zekun) Zhang what makes him special, they rarely begin by listing his degrees or international achievements. Instead, they talk about how he makes students feel — understood, encouraged, and capable of more than they believed possible.
Nathan has helped students succeed in auditions and competitions across the world, from China and Europe to the United States and Australia. His students have been accepted into top universities and conservatories, and many have earned prizes in competitions throughout Queensland and beyond. But he would be the first to say that these successes begin with something simple: believing in each student’s potential.
Before becoming a respected educator, Nathan was a young pianist in China who earned first‑place admission to Guangxi Arts University. He later performed in China and the United States before moving to Australia to continue his studies. At the University of Queensland, he completed both a Master of Music and a PhD in Piano Performance, specialising in French repertoire and Historically Informed Performance. His research, performances, and recordings reflect a lifelong curiosity about how music can be understood, shaped, and shared.
Throughout his training, Nathan was fortunate to learn from generous mentors — musicians and teachers who saw his promise and guided him with patience and insight. He often says that their belief in him shaped the teacher he is today.
In his studio, students experience that same spirit of encouragement. Lessons are personalised, thoughtful, and grounded in a deep understanding of how people learn. Whether preparing for AMEB or ABRSM exams, university auditions, or simply seeking to grow as musicians, students are supported with clarity, structure, and genuine care.
